APEC summit 2011:  was held in Honolulu, Hawaii from 8 November to 13 November 2011. Under the chairmanship of US President Barak Obama, leaders of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum agreed a comprehensive set of measures to increase economic growth and job creation by expanding trade and investment in the Asia-Pacific region.  Leaders agreed to adopt market-driven innovation policies, reduce tariffs and eliminate other barriers to trade in environmental goods and services, and improve regulatory environments to reduce unnecessary burdens on businesses.

Encephalitis : The disease is caused by Japanese Encephalitis virus. The symptoms of encephalitis include headache, fever, convulsions, drowsiness, fatigue and the inflammation of the brain.
In the Magadh division of Bihar an outbreak of viral encephalitis claimed the lives of 82 children since August 2011. 

17th SAARC: The 17th SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) Summit (the heads of states) held in Hithadhoo, Addu, Maldives on 10 November and 11 November 2011. A 20-point Addu Declaration was adopted on 11 November 2011 to forge effective cooperation among the member states in a host of areas including economy, connectivity, climate change and food security.

Lucas Papademos:  Senior banker Lucas Papademos was appointed prime minister of an interim Greek unity government on 10 November 2011. The interim government seeks to cement a European debt deal and ward off national bankruptcy. He replaced outgoing Prime Minister George Papandreou midway through a four-year term.

Ug99: It is a race of black stem rust and it is virulent to the majority of wheat crops.

Wheat crops in India is facing threat from a virulent strain of stem rust called UG99. The scientists asked the farmers to sow Ug99 resistant wheat varieties as a precautionary measure. The US-based Borlaug Global Rust Initiative (BGRI) works on a global campaign for combating Ug99. The scientists at Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) recently developed several varieties of wheat crops that are immune to Ug99. It is important to note that Wheat and Rice are the two crops that majorly fulfill the food demand in India.

IRDA : The insurance regulator, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA), on 9 November 2011 relaxed its earlier decision asking insurance companies to guarantee a minimum return of 4.5 per cent on unit-linked pension policies. IRDA removed the guarantee clause which required all insurers to offer a minimum 4.5 per cent return on the investment made by subscribers.

IRDA mentioned that riders, as a part of pension products, cannot exceed 15% premium. Assured benefit will be based on pension premium and not overall premium. IRDA’s move is expected to revive the pension products industry.

YU55:  A 400-metre-wide giant asteroid, called 2005 YU55, came within 201700 miles of earth on 8 November 2011. An asteroid of this size didn’t come so near to Earth since 1976 and will not again until 2028. 2005 YU55 makes one complete lap around the sun every 15 months.  The asteroid sped off into the deep space at a speed of about 46700 square kilometre per hour.

एंथनी प्रभु गोंजाल्विस : वायलिन वादक एंथनी प्रभु गोंजाल्विस का गोवा की राजधानी पणजी में 18 जनवरी 2012 में निधन हो गया. वह 84 वर्ष के थे. वर्ष 1950 के दशक में वह उस वक्त चर्चा में आए जब वायलिन के बहाने उन्होंने भारतीय और पश्चिमी संगीत परंपरा की विरासत के बहुविध आयामों को मिला कर एक खास किस्म का रंग और आकार दिया. उन्हें पहला ब्रेक संगीतकार नौशाद ने दिया. उन्होंने वर्ष 1965 में मुबई की फिल्म इंडस्ट्री से संन्यास ले लिया.

बॉबी जिंदल : भारतीय मूल के बॉबी जिंदल लगातार दूसरी बार अमेरिका के लुसियाना प्रांत के गवर्नर नियुक्त किए गए. लुसियाना प्रांत के गवर्नर बॉबी जिंदल ने 9 जनवरी 2012 को शपथ ग्रहण लिया. लुसियाना के सुप्रीम कोर्ट की मुख्य न्यायाधीश कैथरीन किट्टी किंबाल ने उन्हें पद एवं गोपनीयता की शपथ दिलाई.

भारती: अंटार्कटिका में भारत के तीसरे स्थायी स्टेशन भारती के मार्च 2012 तक काम शुरू करने की संभावना है. केंद्रीय पृथ्वी विज्ञान मंत्रालय के अनुसार इसके दूसरे चरण के निर्माण का कार्य लगभग पूरा हो चुका है. ज्ञातव्य हो कि अंटार्कटिक में भारत का तीसरा स्थायी स्टेशन भारती के निर्माण का प्रथम चरण का कार्य 7 अगस्त 2011 को पूरा हो गया था.

गोल्डन ग्लोब पुरस्कार 2012 में सर्वश्रेष्ठ फिल्म का पुरस्कार द डिसेंडेंट्स को दिया गया. द डिसेंडेंट्स के लिए सर्वश्रेष्ठ अभिनेता का पुरस्कार जॉर्ज क्लूनी को मिला. जॉर्ज क्लूनी ने लियोनार्डो डी कैप्रियो और ब्रैड पिट को सर्वश्रेष्ठ अभिनेता पुरस्कार में पछाड़ दिया.

69वें गोल्डन ग्लोब पुरस्कार में सर्वश्रेष्ठ अभिनेत्री का पुरस्कार द आयरन लेडी में मारग्रेट थैचर की भूमिका के लिए मेरिल स्ट्रीप को दिया गया. पॉप कलाकार मडोना द्वारा निर्देशित डब्ल्यू ई के गीत मास्टर पीस ने सर्वश्रेष्ठ गाना का पुरस्कार जीता.

होमाई व्यारवाला : भारत की प्रथम महिला फोटो पत्रकार होमाई व्यारवाला का वड़ोदरा में 15 जनवरी 2012 को निधन हो गया. होमाई व्यारवाला 98 वर्ष की थीं और उन्हें वर्ष 2011 में भारत सरकार द्वारा पद्म भूषण से सम्मानित किया गया था. होमाई व्यारावाला का जन्म दिसंबर 1913 में गुजरात के नवसारी में एक पारसी परिवार में हुआ था. होमाई व्यारावाला की शिक्षा-दीक्षा मुंबई में हुई. वर्ष 1942 में उन्होंने दिल्ली में ब्रिटिश इंफॉर्मेशन सर्विसेज में फोटोग्राफर के रूप में काम शुरू किया.

लियोनेल मेसी : अर्जेंटीना के फुटबॉल खिलाड़ी और क्लब फुटबॉल में बार्सिलोना से खेलने वाले लियोनेल मेसी को वर्ष 2011 के लिए फीफा के सर्वश्रेष्ठ फुटबॉल खिलाड़ी का सम्मान दिया गया. लियोनेल मेसी ने यह सम्मान पुर्तगाल के क्रिस्टियानो रोनाल्डो और स्पेन के ज़ावी को पीछे छोड़ते हुए 9 जनवरी 2012 को जीता.

लियोनेल मेसी को लगातार तीसरी बार (वर्ष 2009, 2010 और 2011) फीफा के सर्वश्रेष्ठ फुटबॉल खिलाड़ी का सम्मान मिला है. फीफा के सर्वश्रेष्ठ फुटबॉल खिलाड़ी का सम्मान बलों द'अ (Ballon D’or, गोल्डन बॉल) के नाम से जाना जाता है.

ओपी दत्ता: लेखक और निर्देशक ओपी दत्ता का मुंबई के कोकिला बेन अस्पताल में 9 फरवरी 2012  को निधन हो गया.  ओपी दत्ता ने 1948  में प्यार की जीत के साथ फिल्म निर्देशन का करियर शुरू किया था. उन्होंने रामानंद सागर, रजिन्दर सिंह बेदी, कैफी आजमी और अन्य फिल्म हस्तियों के साथ काम किया. उन्होंने अपने बेटे जे पी दत्ता की गुलामी, हथियार, बार्डर, रिफ्यूजी, एलओसी करगिल और उमराव जान जैसी फिल्मों के संवाद लिखे. अभी वे जेपी दत्ता की सुपर हिट फिल्म बार्डर के सिक्वुअल पर काम कर रहे थे.

व्हाईटनी हुस्टन: पॉप गायिका एवं अभिनेत्री व्हाईटनी हुस्टन का अमेरिका के लॉस एंजिल्स में 11 फरवरी 2012 को निधन हो गया. वह 48 वर्ष की थीं. उनके निधन के खबर की पुष्टि उनके परिवार के प्रवक्ता ने की. ग्रैमी पुरस्कार विजेता व्हाईटनी हुस्टन ने 80-90के दशक में कई हिट गाने गाए. उन्होंने बॉडीगार्ड नाम की फिल्म से अपने फिल्मी करियर की शुरूआत की थी. बॉडीगार्ड  फिल्म का गाना आई विल ऑलवेज लव यू उनका प्रमुख गाना था.

रवींद्र जडेजा: भारतीय क्रिकेट टीम के हरफनमौला खिलाड़ी रवींद्र जडेजा नौ करोड़, 71 लाख रुपये की नीलामी के साथ इंडियन प्रीमियर लीग-पांच की खिलाड़ियों की नीलामी में सबसे महंगे क्रिकेट खिलाड़ी बने. रवींद्र जडेजा को चेन्नई सुपर किंग्स ने 4 फरवरी 2012 को खरीदा.
